How to make falafel sandwich

This middle eastern falafel sandwich is so easy to make, you’ll be eating in no time!

Start by grabbing a high speed blender or food processor. I used my Vitamix for this recipe although a food processor would have worked much better! A large blender will work but you will have to scrape down the sides often, so if you have a food processor opt for that instead!

Add the ingredients for your homemade falafel into your food processor. You’ll need chickpeas, lemon juice, red onion, garlic, dried and fresh herbs, oat or whole wheat flour, salt, pepper and tahini. Pulse until the mixture comes together and the chickpeas have broken apart. Scrape down the sides as needed.

After your falafel ingredients have been blended mold them into your desired shape. For this recipe I molded the falafels into burger patties as I used burger buns but you can use bread or pita bread and shape the falafels however you’d like!

Next, pan fry your falafel patties in a touch of olive oil until both sides are golden. You can omit the olive oil to make this falafel sandwich recipe oil free just make sure to use a good non-stick pan.

Next assemble your falafel sandwich. For this recipe I used lettuce, tomato, my homemade vegan tzatziki, red onion and pickles but you can add any other additional toppings you’d like! A tahini sauce or hummus would also work wonderfully here!

Making Falafel

Some tips from Steph

Use dried chickpeas. You can cook your own chickpeas instead of using canned. Just make sure they are cooked well so they are nice and soft and use 1.5 cups for the recipe! You can cook your chickpeas in a large pot or in the instant pot!

Make baked falafel. You can bake your falafel instead of pan fry. Just pop onto a baking tray and bake a 350f for 25-30 minutes until the outside is golden and crispy.

Use a food processor if you have one available! It blends the falafel much easier than a blender, If you need to use a blender make sure to use a large one like a Vitamix!

Make your falafel into a different shape so you can pair it well with other food such as salads or pitas!

How to serve your falafels

These falafel patties tastes great with hummus, vegan tzatziki, cucumber, pickles, red onion, tomatoes, picked onions, baba ganoush and more!

I like to form the falafel into patties and serve them on a burger or Kaiser bun. That is how I served this specific recipe!

On a salad or nourish bowl! These falafels would taste great grain free on top of a bed of lettuce with all the fixings! You can form them into little balls if you plan on serving them on top of a salad!

As a falafel pita sandwich! This falafel would taste great on a wrap, pitta or in a middle eastern burrito!
