How to make your healthy vegan banana bread

This vegan gluten free banana bread is so simple to make and requires less than 10 minutes of prep time!

Mash your bananas in a large bowl. You’ll need 1+ 1/3 cups of mashed bananas, about 3-4 depending on how big they are. I usually measure this out with a kitchen scale. The bananas should weigh 320g but make sure not to go over this weight or the banana bread will be gummy!

Add the wet ingredients. On top of the mashed bananas add in your flax eggs, apple sauce and vanilla and mix again.

Add in your dry ingredients. Add in the rest of your dry ingredients on top of the wet ingredients and mix to combine.

Next add in the extra flavor! I like to add in chopped walnuts and vegan chocolate chips but you can also add in chopped medjool dates. This is a great alternative to chocolate chips if you want to make your banana bread with 100% no added sugar.

Bake your banana bread! Transfer the batter into a greased or lined loaf pan and bake at 350f for 60-70 minutes. This time will vary from oven to oven, but you’ll want to make sure the bread is crispy and golden on the outside. You’ll know it’s done when you can stab it all the way through with a toothpick and it comes out clean.

What makes this healthier?

This moist vegan banana bread is the ultimate healthy treat. It is made completely with whole foods and has no added sugar or refined grains. Instead of white or refined flour I developed this vegan banana bread with oats and oat flour, so it would be packed with whole grains and fiber and keep you feeling full for hours! This bread is also made with no oil and is naturally sweetened with bananas alone! It is also packed with healthy fats and omegas from the walnuts and flax!

Some tips from Steph

How to make a flax egg. The general rule of thumb to make a flax egg is to mix 1 tablespoon of ground flax with 3 tablespoons of water. Give that a stir and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. For this recipe you will need two flax eggs!

Make sure to weigh your bananas! I weigh out 320g of bananas for this recipe. If you go over this amount the bread will come out gummy! You can weigh out your bananas or measure 1 + 1/3 cups of mashed bananas.

Optional add-ins. For this recipe I added in some vegan chocolate chips and chopped walnuts. I also love adding in some chopped medjool dates for sweetness in place or the chocolate chips. You can also add in any nuts or seeds of choice or some shredded coconut!

Make your healthy vegan banana bread with zero added sugar. To make your vegan gluten free banana bread with no added sugar omit the chocolate chips and make sure to use an applesauce with no added sugar.

Make your own oat flour! To make your own oat flour just blend up some rolled oats until they turn into a fine powder. I like to make a big batch of oat flour so I always have some stored in my pantry.

Switch up the flour. I have not tried this recipe with another flour yet although I think it would work with gluten free flour, spelt flour or all purpose flour. If you try it let me know so I can update the blog!

Make it gluten free. This recipe is naturally gluten free although if you are very strict opt for some certified gluten free oats. Oats are naturally gluten free, but they may contain traces of gluten from manufacturing and cross contamination.
