What the heck is chia?

Chia seeds are tiny black seeds of the chia plant. They contain large amounts of fiber, omega-3 fats and protein, and are one of the 3 super seeds along with flax and hemp. Chia seeds are native to Mexico and Guatemala and were a staple food for the Aztec Mayans! The work “chia” is actually the Mayan word for “strength”. Chia seeds have been proven to improve digestion, increase blood levels of omega 3’s and reduce risk factors for heart disease and diabetes! They are also very unique as they can absorb up to 10x their weight in water! When mixed with liquid they create a gel-like substance and can be used for thickening sauces and baking.
