How to Make Tofu Souvlaki Pita

tofu souvlaki pita recipe

Prepare the Tofu

First, start with your tofu souvlaki. The key to getting the juiciest chicken-like tofu is to bake/air fry your marinated tofu and then pan-fry in sauce. Press the extra firm tofu to remove excess moisture, then rip the pressed tofu into irregular shapes. This will allow the tofu to absorb the marinade better, resulting in a more flavorful souvlaki.

Marinate the Tofu

Add them to a bowl with the rest of your seasonings. Use a spatula and gently mix so the tofu does not break apart.

Air Fry Seasoned Tofu

Air fry at 400f for 12-15 minutes or bake at 400f for 35-40 minutes.

Pan fry Tofu

Once the tofu is crispy, transfer it to a pan over medium heat, and add in your veggie broth and a big squeeze of lemon. Cook for 2-3 minutes so the tofu soaks up the flavors and achieves a juicy, chicken-like texture.

Prepare Veggies

While the tofu cooks, slice up your veggies. Shred lettuce, thinly slice cucumber and red onions and cut cherry tomatoes into halves.

Recipe Tips For Tofu Souvlaki Pita

  • Swap pita bread with naan or a tortilla if you can’t find a pita.
  • Skip pan frying: If you’re short on time, you can omit the pan frying with veggie broth, although it adds much flavour and texture!
  • Marinate tofu for 30 minutes: While a quick marinade can still infuse flavors, marinate the tofu for at least 30 minutes for a mouthwatering treat.
  • Experiment with hummus flavors: To add variety to your pita, experiment with different hummus flavors, such as roasted red pepper or garlic.
  • Add your favorite Toppings: Feel free to get creative with your toppings and add your favorite vegetables when pan-frying the tofu in sauce. Or drizzle your favorite sauce when assembling pitas to take the flavors to new heights.
  • Want a fiery kick? Sprinkle some red pepper flakes or drizzle hot sauce over your assembled pita.
  • Make it gluten-free: Use gluten free pita bread or gluten free tortilla to enjoy the gluten free version of this recipe.
  • Use whole wheat pita for a nutritional punch or opt for a lettuce wrap instead.
