  • Corn Starch

How to make your tofu steak

This is one of the easiest tofu steak recipes and requires only a few ingredients.

Start by pressing your tofu. Pressing your tofu releases the liquid from the tofu so it is able to absorb more flavor and become super crispy! If you do not press your tofu it will still taste great but will not have that meaty, crispy texture. To press your tofu you can use a you can use a tofu press or you can wrap your tofu in a kitchen towel and place some heavy objects on top such as an air fryer, some books, or a pot with some cans inside of it! Press for at least 15 minutes or up to 6 hours!

Slice your tofu into strips. I slice mine into about 8-9 strips. You can make them whatever shape you’d like or even cube them so you can toss them on top of a salad, curry or pasta!

Prepare your flavorings by gathering two shallow bowls. In one bowl add in some soy sauce and in the other mix together your nutritional yeast, corn starch and steak spice.

Prepare your tofu by first dunking it into the soy sauce then into the nutritional yeast mixture. Place your tofu into an air fryer and air fry until crispy. Click here for the air fryer I use! (affiliate link) This will take a different amount of time based on how thick your tofu is, how long you you’ve pressed it and the brand of tofu but I usually air fry at 400f for 13-16 minutes flipping halfway through.

What kind of tofu should I use for my tofu steak

When cooking with tofu it is important to get the right kind! When making tofu into steaks, or adding tofu cubes to a curry, or on top of a salad or pasta always make sure to use extra firm tofu. The firmer the tofu the less water it has and the more it will crisp up. If your tofu is too soft it will have the texture of jello and fall apart, so make sure to get the right kind!

How to eat your tofu steak

My favorite way to eat these tofu steaks is simply with a side of veggies and a simple carb such as potatoes or rice. To me this is the perfect easy wholesome meal that always leaves me feeling amazing! I look at it as the vegan bodybuilder equivalent to chicken and rice!

Make a tofu steak sandwich. Add your tofu steaks to your fav bread along with some vegan mayo, tomato, lettuce and onion for a filling meal!

Have your tofu steak as a healthy snack. I love to prep extra of this recipe and have leftovers in the fridge. It makes for the best quick and easy high protein snack! It tastes great cold and is a quick and easy way to get in some protein!

Cut your tofu into cubes and use it in pasta, curries, stir fry’s, salads and more! This is another one of my favorite uses for this tofu recipe! Instead of cutting your tofu into strips cut it into small cubes. Place in a bowl, toss in soy then in your nutritional yeast mixture. Air fry or bake until crispy then pop on top of any dish!

Some tips from Steph

Make it lower sodium. If you need your tofu steak to be lower in sodium you can water down the soy sauce with a 1:1 ratio of water, or you can sub the soy sauce for some low sodium vegetable broth or some coconut aminos. You can also use a sodium free steak spice!

Make it ahead of time for meal prep! These tofu steak taste amazing cold right out of the fridge! They make for the best quick and easy snack. I love having leftovers and just eating them by themselves! You can also use them for meal prep and place them into a container with some rice and veggies!

Don’t have an air fryer? Bake it instead! You can bake your tofu steaks at 400f for 25-30 minutes! They still come out super crispy and delicious they just take a little longer! But by far my favorite way to make them is using my air fryer! Click here for the one I use! (affiliate link)

Don’t omit the corn starch! This is what makes the tofu super crispy! You can also sub your cornstarch for tapioca starch.
