How to Make Healthy Vegan Nutella

Roast Hazelnuts

First, start by roasting your hazelnuts. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Spread the hazelnuts evenly on a baking sheet and roast them for about 10 minutes or until golden. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning, especially near the end of the cook time! Allow the roasted hazelnuts to cool. You can also use pre-roasted (unsalted) hazelnuts.

Remove the Skins

If your hazelnuts have skins, transfer them to a kitchen towel. Fold the towel over the hazelnuts and rub them together gently. The skin will start to flake off. Try to remove as much skin as possible before tossing the hazelnuts into your blender.

Make Hazelnut Butter

Blend the hazelnuts in a high-speed blender until completely smooth – it should take less than 5 minutes. Hazelnuts are very easy to turn into nut butter!

Vegan Nutella Recipe Tips

🚨IMPORTANT🚨: Do not use water-based ingredients such as plant milk, maple syrup, or another liquid sweetener. It will cause the nut butter to seize up, and the Nutella will not be smooth and creamy. Even vanilla should be kept to a minimum – just 1 tsp tops!

Use High-Speed Blender: Use a high-speed blender or food processor. A regular blender will not work here!

Use 1/4-1/3 cup powdered coconut sugar, depending on how sweet you like it – I used 1/3 cup.

Can I use another sweetener? Yes, you can use another dry sweetener such as stevia or granulated sugar, however, do not use liquid sweeteners such as maple syrup or honey, as these will cause your nut butter to seize up!

Can I use pre-roasted hazelnuts? You can purchase pre-roasted unsalted hazelnuts; ensure the skins are removed before blending!

Remove Hazelnuts skins: Make sure to remove the skins before blending; otherwise, your nut butter will not be smooth and creamy!

Can I make it oil free? Yes, you can make this healthy vegan Nutella recipe without oil.

Can I make powdered coconut sugar at home? Yes, you can make powdered coconut sugar at home by blending up coconut sugar until it becomes a fine powder. You could also use regular coconut sugar, although using powdered coconut sugar results in a smoother nut butter.

Storage tip: Store in a clean jar/container for up to 6 months. However, it will likely finish in a few days because it’s THAT good! You can also store it in the refrigerator if you prefer to eat it cold.
