How are vegan gummy bears made?
This homemade vegan gummy bears recipe is actually quite simple! It takes about 10 minutes of prep time for each flavor and here’s how to do it:
Add ingredients to your blender. For each flavor add in all of the ingredients except for the agar agar powder and blend until completely smooth.
Heat the mixture in a small pot and bring to a gentle simmer then whisk in the agar agar and stir continuously for 1-2 minutes.
Transfer the mix into your molds. I used the eye dropper that came with the molds. Click here for the gummy bear mold I used!
Let the gummies sit in the molds in the fridge for 10-15 minutes to harden. The gummies will firm up while they cool!
What is agar agar?
Agar agar is a thickener made from algae! This vegan gummy bears recipe is made vegan by the use of agar agar powder. Traditionally gummies are made with gelatin which is a thickener derived from animal bones, but instead we’re using agar agar! Do keep in mind that the gummies do not turn out as chewy as when using gelatin so don’t expect the exact same texture! Click here for the Agar Agar I used!
Things you need to know making this vegan gummy bears recipe
You do not need a mold to make these vegan gummy bears! If you do not want to purchase a mold you can double or triple the batch and pour the mixture into a baking tray. Let it set in the fridge then slice into little squares and enjoy! If you do want a mold, click here for the gummy bear mold I used!
Switch up the flavors! You can make any flavor you’d like! All you really need is liquid and some sort of flavoring! Try blending in some fruits, fruit juices and more!
Make gummy vitamins! A great way to make these gummies is by blending in some truly nutritious ingredients! Try adding in some ginger, turmeric and black pepper for an anti-inflammatory gummy!
The gummies will not be as chewy as you are used to! Agar agar doesn’t firm up the same as gelatin so make sure to keep this in mind! They still have a nice subtle chew but have a totally different texture!
Make these gummies with dates as a sweetener if you do not want to add in any maple syrup or sugar! It’s a great way to keep the gummies made with 100% whole foods!
How to store your vegan gummy bears
You can store your vegan gummy bears in the fridge for up to one week! I like to keep them in a container and snack on them throughout the week! They also taste amazing when they are chilled!
